casco viejo

We were picked up from the hotel at 9.30 a.m and first we visited the old town of Panama. The buildings are very ruined but they are starting to rebuild the old town which is called casco viejo. It is the same than in havanna and old Panam-city belongs to the “Weltkulturerbe” as Unesco declared. There are nice places and once upon a time only the rich people lived there. I was really impressed by the Indian women, they offered handicraft souvenirs, and they were dressed in their traditional way, for example they had specially ornamented legs. I was astonished by a typical cold drink here: it was just an frozen water-ice block, the man scrached it and put some flavour on it – I’ve never seen it before but we didn’t dare to try it because we don’t know if the water is good or not.

After that we drove to the Panama-canal. A direct connection from the Pacific to the caribbean sea. 40 ships pass every day: for the big ones the fair is about 200.000 dollar and the ship needs 24 hours. sailing boats and yachts must pay around 500 dollars, once a man swam trhough the canal and had a special agreement – he only had to pay 36 cents. There is also a museum, where you can learn more about the history of the channel. It was build from 1904 till 1914 and 75.000 people worked on it but around 25.000 people died (many of them because of malaria). We have the same system at the river danube.

After that we started our voyage to David. This is a town near the border to Costa Rica and there is the harbour, where we will get on board. We stayed in the Grand national hotel, we arrived very late about 8 o’clock pm. We just went for dinner, a bottle of wine, some gin tonic and than fell asleep.

yesterday the rest of our group arrived, but one member is missing: he has pneumonia and could not join the trip. bad! :(

we went – surprise, surprise! – eating argentinian steaks in a restaurant nearby. ilse told us the latest news from home and after some drinks we all fell into our beds.

now we are waiting for our bus to david. on the way there we will visit the panama canal and the old quarter of panama city. after the sightseeing stops we will travel for maybe 6 or 7 hours to david where the ‘inula‘ is waiting for us. i guess the first dive will be tomorrow and our date with the hammerheads is in a couple of days. some of us are excited, some of us are frightened…

we don’t know if we will have an internet connection over there, so we wish you already a verry merry xmas and a happy new year! we try to stay in touch though.

take care,

well, well. we are in panama city! so far we did no sightseeing at all, just shopping, eating steaks and drinking redwine. we fight the jetlag with going out and it works quite well!

the flight over here was defintitely one of the most uncomfortable ones ever. we sat in the last row and couldn’t lean backwards with our seats but the people in front of us could though – so they literally slept on our knees – and our food was frozen. but we drank whiskey and wine, so it was not this bad. haha!

panama city is a lot different than we had imagined it. huge skyscrapers, noisy and really dark. sabrina said that the city looked like a city from a marvel comic. outside it’s really hot, but inside we freeze because of the airconditioning everywhere – we are afraid that our ears won’t like this… max (who is travelling with us) is already sick, but we are fine until now. hopefully we will stay healthy!

yesterday we went to a restaurant with a folklore show. of course a tourist trap but it was quite funny. the dancers shrieked like seals and the way to dance is really strange. but the food, uuuuhh… we had a seafood salad but i won’t decribe how it looked like.

today ilgesasa will be complete again: ilse will arrive in the evening! juhujuhujuhu! and tomorrow we will visit the panama canal and drive to the west coast. our ship waits in david, so only 2 days until the first dive. we can’t wait!

…we’re ready to go!

event

actually there are only a couple of hours left until our departure. we’re flying at 6:40 am, so i’m considering to stay awake. we’ll see!

our route: vienna – amsterdam – tons of waiting time – amsterdam – panama city.

i’ll take my laptop with me and maybe we are able to upload from time to time but we will write an offline-diary that we publish back home. for sure this time!

hi there you guys, long time no see – we know, we know! well, today i improved some parts of our website and fooled around here a bit. i still want to make a better photo page and some changes in the design, maybe next week. at least i finally upgraded our wordpress-version! we all four have lots of work and school these days before christmas, but maybe in our holidays we can work out something together.

and i also made a checklist for our next holidays (malpelo!) because usually packing looks like this:
packing for malpelo
actually we have been using these kind of checklists for our trips for a couple of years now and we try to make them better after every use. i uploaded them for you, as well, but until now we only have them in german (maybe we will work out an english version too!).

so, tell me what you think of it and if anything is missing? we will keep our list updated.
